Not all of the bands that have been a part of the history and development of progressive rock are necessarily progressive rock bands themselves. This is why a genre called Prog Related is included, so that all the bands that complete the history of progressive rock are included, whether or not they were considered full-fledged progressive rock bands themselves. Read more here.

Nursery Cryme is the third studio album by Genesis that was recorded and released in 1971. It's the band's first album with drummer Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett who replaced John Mayhew and Anthony Phillips, respectively, in 1970 and 1971. The five-member line-up of Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Collins and Hackett would remain consistent until the band's 1976 album A Trick of the Tail, when Phil Collins replaced Peter Gabriel as lead vocalist following Gabriel's departure from the band. Nursery Cryme is also the band's shortest studio album. Read more here.

As it's name clearly indicates, Proto-Progressive Rock refers to the earliest form of progressive rock or progressive rock in embryonary state. The Proto-Prog bands normally were formed and released albums before prog rock had completely developed, but there are some rare Proto Prog bands from the early 70's as well, because the genre didn't expanded to all the continents simultaneously. The common elements in all these bands is that they developed one or more elements of prog, and even when not completely defined as part of the genre, they are an important stage in the evolution of progressive rock. Read more here.

The Old Grey Whistle Test (OGWT) was an influential BBC2 television music show that ran from 1971 to 1987. It took over the BBC2 late night slot from "Disco Two", which had been running since January 1970, while continuing to feature non-chart music. It was devised by BBC producer Rowan Ayers. According to presenter Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before. When they got the first pressing of a record they would play it to people they called the old greys (doormen in grey suits). The songs they could remember and whistle, having heard it just once or twice, had passed the old grey whistle test. Read more here.

Trespass is the second studio album by Genesis and was recorded and released in 1970. Their last album with guitarist Anthony Phillips, Trespass had a folk-flavoured progressive rock sound that was a marked departure from their earlier work. The compositions were generally much longer and more complex than those on Genesis' first album, and the recordings have a muted, pastoral sound. Read more here.

The Beatles are not progressive in the true sense but, this record is more than rock: it contains the early psychedelic patterns and it also contains basic progressive elements that surely contributed to make the progressive rock style itself to emerge. This album is often considered the starting point of progressive rock. Read more here.

The Isle of Wight Festival is a music festival which takes place every year on the Isle of Wight in England. It was originally held from 1968 to 1970. The 1970 event was by far the largest and most famous of these early festivals and the unexpectedly high attendance levels led, in 1971, to Parliament passing the "Isle of Wight Act" preventing gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special licence. Read more here.

In their early years, Kaipa was one of Sweden's best 70's symphonic prog bands. The band was originally formed by Hans Lundin (vocals, keyboards) and Tomas Eriksson (bass), along with drummer Thomas Sjöberg who left the group the following year, though. His replacement on drums was Ingemar Bergman. Roine Stolt joined Kaipa as their guitarist in 1974 when he was 17. Read more here.
