Arthur Brown

Arthur Brown is an English rock musician best known for his flamboyant, theatrical style, wide ranging operatic vocal style and significant influence on Alice Cooper, Peter Gabriel, Marilyn Manson, George Clinton, Kiss, King Diamond, and Bruce Dickinson, among others, and for his number one hit in the UK Singles Chart and Canada, "Fire" in 1968. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

The Beatles are not progressive in the true sense but, this record is more than rock: it contains the early psychedelic patterns and it also contains basic progressive elements that surely contributed to make the progressive rock style itself to emerge. Quicksilver Messenger Service

Quicksilver Messenger Service (sometimes credited as simply Quicksilver) is an American psychedelic rock band formed in 1965 in San Francisco. Though not as commercially successful as contemporaries Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver was integral to the beginnings of their genre. With their jazz and classical influences and a strong folk background, the band attempted to create a sound that was individual and innovative. Read more here.

Kaleidoscope (Fairfield Parlour)

Kaleidoscope was a great English psychedelic rock/proto-prog band (not to be confused with the American band Kaleidoscope which existed at the same period and played basically psychedelic rock too) that was active between 1963 and 1972. The band was also known at various times as The Sidekicks, The Key, I Luv Wight and Fairfield Parlour. They had talent to be one of the major progressive rock acts of their age but they "died" prematurely due to bad luck in the crucial moments. Kaleidoscope were one of the first progressive rock bands that evoluted with the genre and made a fantastic work. Read more here.

The making of The Dark Side of the Moon

The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by the English progressive and psychedelic/space rock band Pink Floyd, released in March 1973. The album's themes include conflict, greed, the passage of time, and mental illness, the latter partly inspired by the deteriorating mental state of Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd's founder member, principal composer and lyricist who left the band in 1968. Family

Family were an English rock band that formed in late 1966 and disbanded in October 1973. Their style has been characterised as progressive rock, although their sound often explored other genres, incorporating elements of styles such as folk, psychedelia, acid, jazz fusion and rock and roll. Read more here. 

Syd Barrett

Syd Barrett was an English singer, songwriter, guitarist, and painter, best remembered as a founder member of the band Pink Floyd. He was the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter during the band's psychedelic years, providing major musical and stylistic direction in their early work. He is also credited with creating their name, but left the group in April 1968. In 1969, Barrett started off a brief solo career. Read more here. 

Hawkwind

Hawkwind are an English rock band with a history of more than 30 years and one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. Formed in November 1969 by saxophone and flute player Nik Turner, guitarist Mick Slattery and singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and styles of music. They practically created the genre of music that is called  psychedelic space rock. Read more here. 

Alice

Named after Lewis Carroll's immortal novel, Alice in Wonderland, this group had an uncommon sound for a French band, more similar in style to contemporary British rock. Alice was one of the first generation of progressive rock groups in France.  Read more here. 

Aphrodite's Child

Aphrodite's Child was a Greek psychedelic and progressive rock band formed in 1967, by multi-instrumentalist Vangelis, vocalist and bassist Demis Roussos, drummer Loukas Sideras and guitarist Argyris "Silver" Koulouris. Their first two albums showed a commercial oriented band with a peculiar sound of psychedelic pop with Greek folk music elements. But with their double concept album 666 (The Apocalypse of John, 13/18), they got a place in progressive rock history. In time the album became recognized as one of the most important early progressive rock works and one of the first concept albums in history. Read more here. 

Bubble Puppy (Demian)

Bubble Puppy is a Texan psychedelic rock band originally active from 1967 to 1971. The group has its genesis in 1966 in San Antonio, Texas by Rod Prince and Roy Cox, who had previously performed together in the rock group called the New Seeds.  In 1970 their name was changed to Demian. Read more here.

Arzachel (Uriel)

The band Arzachel was a pseudonym of the band Uriel, a short-lived English psychedelic rock band during the 1960s, composed of Steve Hillage (guitar/vocals), Dave Stewart (organ), Clive Brooks (drums) and Mont Campbell (bass/vocals). Uriel were formed in London, in 1967. They initially played covers of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and The Nice. After Hillage left in 1968 to attend university, the remaining trio began playing original material written by Campbell and Stewart and  in early 1969 changed their name to Egg, the Canterbury scene progressive rock band. Read more here.

Andromeda

Andromeda was a blend of psychedelic, progressive, jazz and hard rock power trio which lasted only enough to release one album. It is considered a proto-prog band. They were formed back in '68, by John Du Cann, after the break of his previous band, The Attack. Du Cann (guitar), along with Mick Hawksworth (bass) and Jack Collins (drums), recorded a psychedelic rock project named The Five Day Week Straw People, being a concept album much praised by collectors nowadays. After recording this project, the three decided to form a band, that was called Andromeda.  Read more here.
